SATA and IDE - HARD DISK DRIVE CONTROLLERS | ADAPTERS

Magnetic hard disk drive requires controller, which converts instructions from software running on computer to the electrical signals required to operate hard disk.Function of this hard disk controller is to perform read / write operation , data separation, serial to parallel or parallel to serial data conversion, error checking etc.
SATA IDE HARD DRIVE

We have two types of hard disk controller, IDE (Integrated drive electronics) and SATA (Serial advance technology management)

IDE is also known as ATA Standard , The enhanced IDE (EIDE) allows up to 4 channels, each channel can interface upto 2 devices. It can interface optical disk, hard disks, floppy disks and magnetic tapes.
IDE (PATA) transfers data to the speed of 5 Mb/s to 133 Mbps for ATA 100/133 .

SATA (Serial advance technology management) is more flexible and intelligent interface. It is serial interface whereas earlier ATA is parallel interface. SATA data transfers rate is 150 MB /s . SATA integrates CRC (cyclic redundancy checking) for error detection and correction.
SATA cables are longer than IDE cables which makes them more useful in large cases.

SATA hard drive is easy to install because there is not a problem of jumpers but in IDE cable you need to mess with jumpers.

SATA uses low voltage signals which allows embedded controllers to be incorporated into the motherboard.
Presently in all new PC's you find SATA hard disk controller, which is easy to install and has high data transfer rate.
