What is Engine Protection Cover in Motor Car Insurance? A Must Have Add-On

When you buy a car insurance policy, it usually includes coverage for accidents, theft, and third-party liability. But what about one of the most expensive parts of your vehicle—the engine?

That’s where an Engine Protection Cover comes in. It’s an add-on rider to your comprehensive car insurance policy that specifically protects the heart of your vehicle—the engine—from damages not covered under a standard policy.

🔍 Why Standard Insurance Doesn’t Fully Cover Engine Damage

A comprehensive car insurance policy generally covers engine damage only when it’s directly caused by an accident. But it does not cover:

  • Damage from waterlogging (hydrostatic lock)

  • Oil leakage due to broken engine seals

  • Mechanical failures caused by wear and tear or lack of lubrication

That’s a significant financial risk, especially in flood-prone areas or if you drive through water-logged roads.

🛡️ What is Engine Protection Cover?

Engine Protection Cover is an optional add-on that compensates for repairs or replacement of the engine and its internal parts due to non-accidental damages.

It typically covers:

  • Damage due to water ingress (e.g., during floods or heavy rains)

  • Lubricant oil leakage leading to engine seizure

  • Malfunction due to hydrostatic lock (trying to start a wet engine)

  • Damage to the gearbox, pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, etc.

💡 Hydrostatic Lock: This happens when water enters the engine cylinders, preventing the engine from turning over. It’s a common issue during monsoon season and is not covered by default in standard insurance.

🔧 What Parts Are Covered?

  • Engine block

  • Cylinder head

  • Crankshaft

  • Pistons

  • Gearbox

  • Connecting rods

  • Oil pump

❌ What’s Not Covered?

Like any insurance add-on, there are exclusions. Most insurers won’t cover:

  • Gradual wear and tear

  • Regular maintenance or servicing costs

  • Damage due to racing or illegal use

  • Starting a submerged engine (if you try to crank it while flooded)

💸 Is It Worth Buying Engine Protection Cover?

If you live in a flood-prone area, frequently drive in monsoon conditions, or own a premium or diesel car, this add-on is highly recommended.

Average Cost:

  • Between ₹200 to ₹1,000 annually, depending on your car’s make, model, and location.

Potential Savings:

Repairing a hydro-locked or water-damaged engine can cost anywhere from ₹30,000 to ₹2,00,000 or more. So, paying a small premium for engine protection is smart risk management.

📝 How to Add It to Your Policy

  • When buying or renewing your comprehensive car insurance, ask your insurer for the engine protection rider.

  • Compare insurers—some include it in bundled plans, while others offer it as a separate rider.
